XC Touring skis are wider than xc racing skis and have metal edges with sidecut, i.e they are widest at the front end and rear end of the ski. Having sidecut helps he ski to carve in turns. Wider skis are more stable and float more in deep soft or slushy snow. Mid width skis are lighter and track better when touring and are therefore generally a bit faster when touring
