You need boots

Boots are probably the most important thing to get right. They have to fit you so nicely that you want to put them on and keep them on all day. There are a couple of different types. For cross country skiing they all flex across the toes to allow that striding movement and for use in the telemark turn. These days your choice of boot is either with plastic shell or some sort of synthetic outer. There are some places which still have leather boots. For the longer tour most members use a plastic shell boot with a 75mm "Duckbill" toe for use with a cable binding. For shorter tours and day tours some members have the lighter synthetic boot with toe piece for the New Nordic Norm or Nordic Backcountry Binding. Plastic boots are favoured for their waterproofness and hence warmth and comfort and for the control they give you.
