The type of ski you need depends on what type of cross country (Nordic) or Alpine Touring skiing you are doing. Most members of the NSW Nordic Ski Club are into cross country ski touring. They go on trips into the mountains away from the resorts on ungroomed, untracked snow on terrain of varying steepness. Some trips are short day tours, others are extended multi-day snow camping trips....minor expeditions. There are many different skis but predominantly for ski touring a light pattern base cross country touring ski with metal edges is what most people use in conjunction with a freeheel binding.
